Jeff Snody receives Excellence in Education Award from Michigan Lottery

Sarah G. Banks Middle School science teacher, Jeff Snody, was named this week’s Excellence in Education Award winner by the Michigan Lottery.

“Winning the Excellence in Education award reinforces that teaching is what I was meant to do,” said Snody. “I realize now more than ever that what we do as teachers is so impactful to the students that we interact with every day.”

“Jeff Snody is an exceptional science teacher,” said Sarah G. Banks Middle School Principal, Jennifer VanWagnen. “Over the span of his career, he has coached multiple sports and inspired students to be the best version of themselves.”

Snody was nominated for the award by a student.

"Mr. Snody is the kind of teacher who changes lives,” wrote the student nominator. “He does much more than teach lessons, he supports his students, builds their confidence and makes school a better place for everyone. His kindness, hard work and positive attitude make him stand out as an amazing teacher who truly deserves recognition. He always takes time to help anyone who needs it. If a student is struggling, he never gives up on them. He explains things clearly, gives extra help when needed, and makes sure every student understands the material. He listens, he encourages and he makes each student feel important.”

“Mr. Snody was always energetic and ready to help students out,” added Annika, Emily and Sofia, who are three of his former students. “He pushes students to try their best but makes sure they're comfortable during his class hour."

The Michigan Lottery presented Snody with a plaque and $2,000 cash prize as part of the recognition. You can also view his interview on WXYZ-TV from March 17.

Snody is now in the running for the Michigan Lottery’s Educator of the Year Award, which comes with a $10,000 cash prize.
