Course Selection
The class selection form will open on March 10, after the Parent Night.
The course selection deadline is Friday, March 18, by 3 p.m.
6th Grade Encore Course selections
Art (Ten Weeks)
Art classes offer students the opportunity to develop twenty-first century skills in the areas of critical and creative thinking, communication, and collaboration. A variety of media and technology formats will be used as students explore the elements of design, including two and three dimensional media. Students will also be introduced to the principles of design, and they will continue to develop skills and further refine their artistic capabilities.
Band (Full Year)
This is a full-year study and performance course open to all sixth grade students at the beginning level. Students will learn beginning instrument techniques, music writing, and music theory. Attendance at two/three evening performances is a required part of this course. This is a yearlong commitment.
Communication & Theatre Arts (Ten Weeks)
In this class, students will be studying, analyzing, and working on different formats of communication. Some of these formats include formal speeches, drama and improvisation skills, and storytelling. Time will also be spent on digital communication including podcasts, videos, and voice overs.
Design Technology (Ten Weeks)
Using a variety of media technologies, such as computers, digital cameras, and the internet, as well as hand/power tools and building materials, students will design and build projects related to energy, power, transportation and biotechnology systems. Students will also explore career pathways and their connections to technology.
Digital Literacy (Ten Weeks)
This course is designed to equip middle school students with the necessary digital skills to navigate the modern world responsibly and effectively. We will cover essential tools like Google Suite, email etiquette, proper use of digital sources, and an introduction to Artificial Intelligence (AI). By the end of the course, students will have the skills to use digital tools for collaboration, communication, research, and creativity while understanding how to be responsible and ethical digital citizens.
Middle School Success Strategies (Ten Weeks)
In this exploratory course, students will prepare for life’s challenges and opportunities in this engaging and practical course designed to empower middle school students with essential skills for personal and academic success. Students will explore five key areas that are critical to thriving in today’s world.
Orchestra (Full Year)
This is a full-year study and performance course open to all sixth grade students at the beginning level. Students will learn beginning instrument techniques, music writing and music theory. Physical Education (Ten Weeks)
Students will participate in seasonal team and individual sports as well as curriculum-related games and activities. During physical education, students will be required to wear appropriate attire including athletic shoes. Grading will be based on daily participation and skill improvement as well as positive attitude and effort.
Vocal Music (Ten Weeks)
Students will learn healthy singing techniques, how to read music, and learn ear training, including the use of a piano lab. They will also explore the music of different cultures and languages using a wide variety of musical styles. Participation in evening performances, usually one or two a semester, is a required part of the course.
World Languages (Ten Weeks)
Students will examine the importance of learning other languages, bilingualism in the U.S., and how languages are useful in everyday life. They will explore topics including geography, the alphabet, greetings, farewells & courtesies, numbers, and culture of countries where French, German, Spanish, Arabic, and other languages are spoken.
